Mazie Ford was the only verified super-centenarian in Florida. That’s someone who’s over 110 years old.

Ford died earlier this week. Her family said she died peacefully at her condo in Hallandale Beach. She was just seven weeks shy of her 113th birthday in June.

For most college students, Friday nights are a time to wind down and enjoy their youth. But for one group at the University of South Florida, it’s a time to give back to their community.

Project Downtown Tampa is a student organization that prepares and distributes food to the homeless once a week.

Legal aid lawyer Elizabeth Boyle says she was fired from Gulfcoast Legal Services because she refused to drop a case involving a quadriplegic who needs to find long-term care, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports. Boyle had also filed an age discrimination complaint against the nonprofit’s new executive director, who Boyle says wrongly ousted volunteers, many of whom were retired.

TPA Has New Volunteer Ambassador Program

Aug 2, 2012

Just in time for the Republican National Convention, people traveling through Tampa International Airport now have volunteers to greet them with a smile.

It's all part of the airport's new Volunteer Ambassador Program.

The program has 89 volunteers and four new visitor information centers in the airport's baggage claim areas.

The volunteers give information from shuttle bus schedules, to restrooms, to the best attractions in the area.

The 2012 Tampa Bay Host Committee for the Republican National Convention has launched a 10-day push for volunteers.

"As a Host Committee, we want our volunteers to reflect the diversity in our community, so we are encouraging everyone from all walks of life to get involved and register to volunteer," says Host Committee Director of Events and Volunteers Amanda Whitelaw.
