University of South Florida System President Judy Genshaft has made her first public statements following the departure of the leader of USF St. Petersburg.

And while the agreement between the university and former Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska means there's not a lot Genshaft can say, she repeatedly emphasized the university is not looking backwards.

Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska's split with the University of South Florida St. Petersburg came as a result from how she handled student evacuations in the run-up to Hurricane Irma - and where she said she was during the storm itself.

Resiliency is defined as the ability to recover from difficulties.

And when it comes to a life-changing event like Hurricane Irma, there are two different kinds of resiliency: an individual’s ability to bounce back and “community resiliency.”

You probably know the Nietzsche quote: “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”

One University of South Florida researcher is studying that adage – in nature.

Right now, if a researcher wants to confirm there’s a red tide outbreak – you know, that algae bloom known as Karenia brevis that turns water red or brown, kills marine life and makes a horrible stench – they have to take a water sample, bring it back to the lab, put it on a microscope, and literally count the number of algae cells.

Students are moving in this week to their homes for the school year at the University of South Florida.

While there are a number of new halls in "The Village" opening on the Tampa campus, St. Petersburg is packed beyond capacity, with 104 students living in a nearby hotel and apartment complexes that the university reached agreements with over the summer.

The University of South Florida is 61 years old – and believe it or not, that’s pretty young compared to many of the premier research universities that USF wants to be in the company of.

Universities also like to get successful alumni to share their stories with faculty and students, and USF’s age makes that a bit of challenge.

So, USF Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation Paul Sanberg reasoned, why not create an institute that taps into the pool of talent whose careers have recently ended?

In the history of debating, a recent contest held at the Hardee Correctional Institution had one of the more interesting lineup of participants.

On one side were four college students who had never taken part in a debate before. On the other, wearing matching uniforms - dark blue and grey - were a quartet of inmates serving life sentences.

By the time the contest was over, the participants, as well as much of the audience, knew that they had experienced something they probably never would again.

When Florida Gov. Rick Scott got out his veto pen for the 2017-18 state budget last week, about $9.5 million earmarked for University of South Florida projects - plus $4.3 million for a forensic research training facility USF anthropologists will play a part in -  went away.

But university officials were looking on the bright side after a Board of Trustees meeting Thursday.

With the goal of becoming one of the top public-research institutions in the country, the University of South Florida is being guided by a plan to hire 300 new faculty members over the next five years.

The plan would reduce the student-to-faculty ratio on the Tampa campus from the current 22 students per instructor to a 19-to-1 ratio. The move could help the school increase research funding, attract more top-quality faculty and help students graduate more quickly with degrees in high-demand professions.
