Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday signed into a law a higher-education package that changes how public universities and colleges will fund construction projects, a top priority of House Speaker Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes.

The bill (SB 190) was prompted, in part, by a high-profile financial scandal at the University of Central Florida. The university was found to have misused millions of dollars in state funds for a construction project.

In what state university leaders say is another sign of improving quality, Florida's top public universities rose to new heights in the latest U.S. News & World Report annual college rankings.

As more than 6,000 students received their degrees from the University of South Florida this weekend, school officials were urging the Tampa Bay area community to call Florida lawmakers who made a last-minute change to the qualifications for universities to receive "preeminence status." 

It's a move that stands to take away more than $10 million from USF.

New rankings released by U.S. News and World Report say Florida is the number one state in the nation for higher education.

Florida’s community colleges, now called state colleges, can offer more than an associate’s degree: students don’t necessarily have to transfer to complete a bachelor's degree. However, one bill lawmakers will debate this session—SB 374—introduced by Dorothy Hukill, R-Brevard-Volusia, would limit upper-level courses at state colleges.

The University of South Florida is one step closer to joining the University of Florida and Florida State University as one of the state's elite public universities - and one step closer to receiving the funding that goes with that ranking.

On Monday, University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft sent a letter to faculty and staff announcing a new direction - a "path to preeminence" - that aims at bringing the school into "the ranks of America's most elite universities in the next few years."

It's more than just a phrase. Schools in the State University System that achieve "preeminence" or "emerging preeminence" get additional funding from the Florida Legislature.

University System Chancellor Wants Students to Graduate Sooner

College students in Florida need to graduate more quickly while chasing degrees in fields where jobs exist, according to the Chancellor of the State University System of Florida.

Marshall Criser III has led the nation’s second largest university system since January of 2014.

Florida Polytechnic University

In-state undergraduate students who enroll at Florida Polytechnic University next year will get free tuition. The school's Board of Trustees approved the scholarships Monday at its meeting at the Orlando International Airport.

Frank Brogan, who has been chancellor of the State University System of Florida since 2009, is leaving to take a similar job in Pennsylvania. Brogan also served as Lieutenant Governor under Jeb Bush and president of Florida Atlantic University.
