Across Florida, there are communities where artists seem to gravitate and Sarasota is one of those places. Now, years after his death, one of the city's most influential artist's continues to have an impact.

Donald Trump returns to the Florida campaign trail on Saturday for a rally in Sarasota at an arena that holds about 5,500 people. His campaign on Wednesday was considering moving the event outdoors to accommodate a larger crowd for Trump, who is crushing Florida favorite sons Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio in state polls. The “mass hysteria” can’t last, says veteran Florida Republican operative and Bush supporter Mac Stipanovich, though he admits he’s getting less confident as the weeks and months go by with Trump atop the polls.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry Coming to Sarasota

Texas Gov. Rick Perry who has already made several visits to Iowa and New Hampshire is now planning to be in Sarasota in November to receive the “Conservative of the Year Award” from the local Republican Party. Perry has not ruled out running again for president in 2016 and told Bloomberg Television last month that his fizzled campaign in 2012 was partly due to him trying to recover from back surgery.

Report Accentuates Value of a Healthy Sarasota Bay

Paul Hindsley, an associate professor of environmental studies at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, ran the numbers and came up with a figure of $57.9 billion for Sarasota Bay's total economic value. That includes $11.8 billion of value for Sarasota and Manatee counties. Hindsley's analysis touches on everything from bay-related tourism spending to the increased property values that come from living near the water. It also attempts to quantify indirect benefits, such as the value of healthy mangroves in protecting against hurricane storm surge.

Sarasota County has a higher percentage of people over 65 than any other large county in the nation. And some business leaders now say that all those seniors - rather than a demographic drawback - could be a valuable asset.

They could actually help diversify the economy - even turn the county into what they're calling a "mecca" for those who want to learn what an aging population looks like.
