Sanford Burnham

Sanford Burnham has fired back to state officials demanding repayment of incentive money.

The University of Florida is backing out of its deal to take over Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in Lake Nona.

A medical research organization that has received more than $350 million in public and private incentives says its Orlando facility's long-term outlook is in doubt because federal research funding isn't keeping pace with costs, and that's why it asked the University of Florida to take over, according to a letter its leaders sent to Gov. Rick Scott's office this week.

Leaders of a research organization that has been key to the growth of a medical research community in central Florida say the firm is now in talks with the governor's office about having the University of Florida take over its Orlando facility.

Details are emerging on Sanford-Burnham's planned exit from Orlando.
