Free Museum Day is returning to Tampa Bay on Saturday. Hosted by Smithsonian Magazine, museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free admission as part of this "annual celebration of boundless curiosity."

“This event is important as it highlights the culture, history, science, art, and nature that each state has to offer and represents a national commitment to access to these unique places,” said Amy Wilkins, Chief Revenue Officer at Smithsonian Media.

Nearly two dozen Tampa Bay area museums are participating in the 14th annual free Museum Day Saturday (Sept. 22.) Smithsonian Magazine sponsors the one-day event which provides free entry to anyone with a ticket from the Museum Day site. Two general admission tickets are included in each individual email request.

From intricate goblets to towering church windows, glass has been used to blend beauty with function since ancient times. But it's only in the last 50 years or so that the medium was used to create art solely for the sake of art.

Florida's Gulf Coast is becoming a hub for glass collections, with some in the business dubbing it the "Glass Coast."

This Sunday (May 15), The Ringling Museum will open its new Center for Asian Art.

David Berry is the Ringling's Assistant Director for Academic Affairs and is one of the project managers for the Center. He said the time is right to open a new home for a permanent collection of traditional, modern and contemporary art from Japan, Korea, China, India and Southeast Asia.
