The Tampa Bay Rays on Friday celebrated the team's annual Pride Night, dedicating it to the victims of Sunday's mass shooting at Orlando's Pulse nightclub.

Pride Night saw the biggest regular-season crowd at Tropicana Field in a decade. According to the Associated Press, "the announced attendance of 40,135 was the first regular-season turnout to surpass 40,000 at the Rays' ballpark since opening day in 2006 against Baltimore." That crowd was 40,199.

As mourners hold funerals in Orlando for the victims of last week's nightclub shooting, the city's theater community is banding together to protect them from anti-gay protesters.

Dressed in white and wearing large wings, the "angels" stood in a row in order to shield the family and friends of the victims. The idea, according to American Theatre, is to allow the mourners to "grieve in peace."

Gun Sales Soar After Orlando Shooting

Jun 17, 2016

Gun sales have dramatically increased in Florida in the wake of Sunday's mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub that left 49 people dead and dozens wounded.

Orlando Regional Medical Center got 44 patients from the Pulse night club shooting.

It’s a Level 1 Trauma Center, and medical staff there were pushed to the limit as they dealt with the onslaught of patients coming from the Pulse nightclub shooting that happened just three blocks away. Medical staff and patients recounted the events of early Sunday morning.

Omar Mateen, who authorities say killed 49 people at the gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Fla., was reportedly no stranger to the club.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that some Pulse regulars recognized Mateen, saying that he had spent time at the nightclub before the shooting early Sunday. Witnesses have said the same to authorities, NPR's Dina Temple-Raston reports, citing U.S. officials with knowledge of the investigation.

Meanwhile, at least two men have told the media they interacted with Mateen on gay dating apps. Investigators have not commented on the claims.

About one hundred people gathered near the Metro Wellness Center in Ybor City Sunday night to remember the victims of the Orlando shooting.

Like another vigil held in St. Petersburg, a collection of interfaith groups and other civic activist groups organized the gathering.
