The COVID-19 pandemic has filled homes across the globe but has emptied shelves at supermarkets.

Residents looking to stock up on essentials have left stores trying to catch up with the demand.

Grocery giants Publix and Winn-Dixie say they will begin installing plexiglass barriers at the cash registers to protect its workers and customers from the coronavirus.

A statement from Winn-Dixie parent company, Southeastern Grocers, says all of its stores should have the barriers installed by April 3; a Publix spokeswoman says its stores should have the barriers up within the next two weeks.

As other areas of the economy contract, Publix announced Friday that it is hiring thousands of workers to meet “unprecedented demand.”

With jittery shoppers flocking to supermarkets to stock up on supplies for the coronavirus outbreak, some of the country's largest grocery chains are announcing measures to enhance sanitation and maintain supplies.

Across the U.S., hand sanitizer, toilet paper, sanitation wipes and canned goods have been flying off shelves as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to climb.

Publix is shortening its store hours to give employees time to restock shelves and clean its locations due to coronavirus demand.

It’s called “the plastic monster.” The 15-foot sculpture made of plastic bags, bottles, and packaging visited the state Capitol in Tallahassee earlier this month and has stopped in Publix parking lots throughout the state.

Lakeland-based Publix, which has a large presence on the First Coast, is the latest major business to request that its customers not openly carry guns.

According to a Tampa Bay Times investigation, Publix has given more money to Adam Putnam's bid for governor than any other candidate since at least 1995. 

After several news stories highlighted that Publix routinely denies employees access to  HIV prevention medication and growing outcry on social media, the grocery store chain announced a change of course Tuesday.

On its official Twitter account, Publix said it will now cover Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)--a medication that reduces the risk of catching of HIV. Florida leads the country in new HIV cases.

University of South Florida students are saying goodbye to the Andros housing complex and saying hello to "The Village."

University officials unveiled the name of the estimated $133 million housing development at an event Thursday, along with the names of the five planned residence halls.

Grocery shoppers in South Tampa will have something new to look forward to later this year.

Publix Supermarkets Inc. will open its first Starbucks kiosk at their West Gandy Boulevard store.

They plan to open more in the future.

Ashley Kritzer, a reporter with the Tampa Bay Business Journal, said with the number of specialty grocers coming to the Tampa Bay area, the Lakeland-based chain is trying to stay ahead of competition.

Shopping will soon be a pleasure for University of South Florida students, faculty and staff who will be able to stop at a new Publix Supermarket going up where the Andros student living complex currently is. 

The Florida Board of Governors - the head of  the State University System of Florida - approved the plan to build the store Thursday.

The contract with the Lakeland-based chain would run for 21 years, with six five-year renewals available for a 50-year total term.

By this time in 2018,  the University of South Florida's fifty-plus year old Andros housing complex will be no more.

In its place will stand a brand new housing village, complete with retail spaces, outdoor pool and fitness center, a dining facility and more than 2,000 student beds.

Even when picking up "just a few items," between the drive, parking and checking out, grocery shopping can be a tedious and time-consuming effort. Seeing the need, Bill Smith created Shipt.

Shipt is based in Birmingham, Ala., and recently made its Florida debut with a celebration in Tampa. Shipt users download the Shipt application onto their smartphones or tablets. Using their marketplace, customers select their items and pay for the items from the app.

Publix will extend insurance plans to same-sex spouses of employees who are legally married.

The company announced that it will open enrollment on Jan. 1 for any employee who can who show proof of lawful marriage in a state where same-sex unions are allowed.

The couples will get the same health care coverage as any heterosexual couple.
