City of Sarasota commissioners have voted in favor of an ordinance to ban Styrofoam and limit single-use plastic straws on city-owned property.

Plastic straws would still be available for people who specifically request them and the policy does not apply to private businesses.

Governor Ron DeSantis said he wouldn’t vote for a plastic straw ban if he was a city or municipal leader.

The governor made the comments to local leaders at the Florida League of Cities conference Friday in Orlando.

In the last few months, Key West has banned the sale of chemical sunscreens and the use of styrofoam and some pesticides on city property. Now the city is taking on single-use plastics.

A fight over disposable straws could return to the state Legislature, even after Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year vetoed a bill that would have blocked local governments from banning plastic straws.

Controversy Swirls Around Straws And Sunscreen

What started out as an effort to prevent local governments from regulating the distribution of plastic straws morphed Monday into a push for a study on the issue, lumped in with an attempt to prohibit cities and counties from banning certain sunscreens.

The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, the Florida Retail Association and Disability Rights Florida are among the groups supporting the study on straws.

A number of environmental groups opposing the proposal (SB 588) argue that studies already show plastic and certain sunscreens are detrimental to the environment.

Local governments wouldn’t be able to regulate single-use plastic straws under a measure filed Thursday in the House. 

The Seminole Tribe of Florida plans to eliminate plastic straws at its six casinos in the state.

Walt Disney is the latest company to announce a plan to eliminate plastic straws. The company plans to get rid of them by mid-2019.

When a huge floating gyre of plastic waste was discovered in the Pacific in the late 1980s, people were shocked. When whales died and washed ashore with stomachs full of plastic, people were horrified. When photographs of beaches under knee-deep carpets of plastic trash were published, people were disgusted.

Though some of it came from ships, most, presumably, was from land. But how much was coming from where?
