The Pinellas County man who fatally shot an unarmed black man during a dispute over a handicapped-accessible parking space told detectives he fired because he had been pushed to the ground and feared the man was about to "finish" what he started, video played at his trial Thursday shows.


A Florida police DUI enforcement effort ended up netting a police officer.

A rug containing a misprint that has gotten the attention of news outlets worldwide is on the auction block.

A couple of months ago, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office installed a pair of rugs in the lobby of its Largo headquarters. Earlier this week, a deputy realized that one of them read "In Dog We Trust" instead of "In God We Trust."

Thursday, the Sheriff's Office released a statement saying:

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has released a very creative statement in regards to a rug in its headquarters bearing the typo "In Dog We Trust":

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will not "sweep anything under the rug."

In light of the continued and extensive interest regarding our plans for the "doggone" rug, at this time we can confirm that the rug will be auctioned online with proceeds to be donated to a local animal rescue group.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri is helping lead an effort to defeat a proposed constitutional amendment that would legalize medical marijuana. Both a lawman and an attorney, Gualtieri was appointed sheriff by Gov. Rick Scott in 2011. He was elected in his own right the following year.

While a nice soak in a hot tub may sound pleasant to human beings, it's not exactly the same experience for wildlife, particularly a doe that needed to be pulled from a Palm Harbor spa by a trapper and Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a small doe ran through the pool screen of a home on Radcliffe Drive in the Lansbrook subdivision this morning and fell into the spa, apparently knocking itself unconscious.

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies discovered the boat belonging to two fishermen whose bodies were discovered on Lake Tarpon Wednesday.

Sheriff's officials say the aluminum Jon Boat was found submerged in about 13 feet of water off the east coast of the lake Thursday afternoon. They add that the boat didn't appear to have any significant damage, but a thorough inspection was going to be done on it over the next few days.
