It’s the norm for Republicans to paint themselves as the Trump-iest of candidates in GOP primaries.

But two Democrats vying for Florida governor are taking a twist on the Trump train, with smear campaigns linking each other to a president reviled by left-leaning voters deemed crucial for a primary election victory.

We check out two claims from candidates for governor with Allison Graves of PolitiFact Florida: Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum said fellow Democratic candidate Philip Levine passed resolutions during his time as mayor of Miami Beach banning assault weapons and raising the minimum wage -- even though both never had any chance of being enforced.

And Republican candidate Adam Putnam claims that Florida taxpayers “pay tens of millions of dollars a year to feed and house criminal Illegal aliens."

As gubernatorial candidates start ramping up their primary campaigns, Democrat Philip Levine made a stop in St. Petersburg to gauge students' priorities.

Levine sat in a circle with about a dozen students at St. Petersburg College on Thursday, fielding questions about gun control, environmental protection and student debt.  He calls these intimate events "campus conversations."

Levine touted his record as the former mayor of Miami Beach, telling students he has acted on the issues that matter most to young people.
