A Pasco County sheriff’s corporal, whose gun accidentally fired in a busy middle school cafeteria nearly six months ago, caused the accident himself by “fidgeting” with his gun and has been fired after an investigation, authorities announced Wednesday.

In March, WUSF was the only media outlet invited to join students and agents from the FBI on a visit to a University of South Florida-run facility where researchers learn what happens to the dead when they're exposed to Florida's elements.

But USF will lose its access to the site in a few years, raising questions of both why and what’s next.

Since 2006, the University of South Florida has brought together FBI agents and students studying to become forensic investigators for a field training day.

In earlier versions, they’d meet on the Tampa campus or on the nearby grounds of MOSI and look at how the bodies of buried pigs decompose in Florida’s climate. But for the past few years, they’ve actually had a dedicated field – and real human bodies – to study.

A 55-year-old man on death row for the murder of a Pasco County waitress will soon walk free.

The Florida Supreme Court ruled Thursday that there wasn't enough evidence to convict Derral Hodgkins for the 2006 murder of 46-year-old Teresa Lodge.

Lodge was found dead in her Land O'Lakes apartment.

She had been beaten, strangled and stabbed multiple times.

Hodgkins' skin was found under her fingernails, but investigators didn't find a weapon or other evidence that placed Hodgkins at the scene.

The Tampa Bay Times says Adam Matos was arrested at a downtown Tampa hotel after a day-long manhunt.

According to a release from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, 15 year old Zach Brown left around 5:20 p.m. after an argument over being banned from Facebook.

Chad Oulson was described by friends as a man who loved dirt bikes and his baby daughter. Curtis Reeves was a retired Tampa police officer with numerous commendations who liked riding his motorcycle with his wife.

The men's lives collided in a Wesley Chapel movie theater altercation that left Oulson dead and Reeves in jail. Oulson was texting his daughter's daycare, friends said, and Reeves got angry. Authorities said Reeves shot and killed Oulson with a handgun after the men exchanged words Monday.
