The Morean Arts Center in St. Petersburg runs a program that teaches glassblowing to veterans. Researchers at the University of South Florida recently evaluated the program, known as Operation Art of Valor.

Ocala-based artist Robert Mickelsen used a torch to transform thin glass tubes into a human hand. Scroll through this slideshow to see how it came together, and see some other pieces on display at free exhibits for the public.

Hundreds of glass artists and enthusiasts from around the world are in St. Petersburg this weekend for the 2019 Glass Art Society conference.

From intricate goblets to towering church windows, glass has been used to blend beauty with function since ancient times. But it's only in the last 50 years or so that the medium was used to create art solely for the sake of art.

Florida's Gulf Coast is becoming a hub for glass collections, with some in the business dubbing it the "Glass Coast."

Most recently, readers of the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle were clued in on something Tampa Bay residents have known for years; St. Pete is home to world-famous museums and dozens of art galleries.  If you haven’t ventured to the city’s downtown recently, you might be surprised how much the arts scene has grown.
