Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam made his pitch for governor before a group of civic leaders in Tampa Friday morning.

Putnam laid out his vision for education reform before taking questions from the audience at Cafe Con Tampa. He called for increased funding for technical colleges and vocational training in Florida's middle and high schools.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman is wrapping up the first month of his second term in office. This week on Florida Matters he'll talk about his goals for this term, and how he plans to unite a city that was divided during last year's bitter mayoral race.


Democrats Rep. Shevrin Jones (D-West Park) and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum are speaking out against preemption policies. They’re pushing back against what they view as quote “the war on local communities.”

Local control advocates said the Florida legislature has taken preempting home rule to a new level this session. The legislature wants to extend property tax breaks, regulate vacation rentals and community redevelopment agencies.

Florida mayors came to the Capitol this week to circle the wagons.
