The current Thanksgiving travel season is projected to be the busiest time to fly with more than 26.8 million passengers - a new record, according to the Transportation Safety Administration - flying between November 22 and December 2.

Tampa International Airport officials are bracing for an influx of holiday travelers coming into and leaving the Tampa Bay area.

The airport saw a record number of passengers during the spring break season and the number of travelers during the 2017 Thanksgiving week was seven percent higher than their busiest year thus far.

Officials said they are expecting this trend to carry over into the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The official holiday travel period started Friday and goes through the first week of the New Year, and Tampa International Airport officials are expecting almost a million travelers to pass through.

University of South Florida students flying home this week for the Thanksgiving holiday can catch a free ride to the airport.

Under a plan put together by Student Government, students flying out of Tampa International Airport Tuesday night or Wednesday can hop on board a bus outside the Marshall Student Center.
