Regulators Sign Off On TECO Solar Projects

The Florida Public Service Commission on Monday gave a key approval to a Tampa Electric Co. plan that will add five solar-energy projects in Hillsborough and Polk counties.

With a week left until the midterm elections, some advocacy groups are working to gain support for Hillsborough County tax referendums. Representatives from All for Transportation and Strengthen our Schools were in Tampa Monday, trying to encourage Hillsborough County residents to vote for local initiatives. 

All three of the flu outbreaks that have been reported in Florida so far this season occurred in Hillsborough County, according to the state.

Florida typically leads the nation in child drownings and this year Hillsborough County is leading the state. Seventy-four children have drowned in Florida this year, including nine in Hillsborough, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families.

With the new school year around the corner, members of Hillsborough County's Back-to-School Coalition are trying to ensure students get their immunization shots, even if they're not able to afford it.

Prescribed burns are a part of precautions taken throughout Florida to prevent massive forest fires by clearing flammable debris from the ground. They are meant to keep people safe, but one such burn was quite the opposite.

Hillsborough County commissioners voted 6-1 in favor of spending another $61 million on maintenance of Tampa’s Amalie Arena.

Commissioner Stacy White was the only one of seven to vote against this plan Wednesday.

“I felt it would be premature to be spending such a large amount of the Tourist Development Tax revenues without knowing if they would become available in the future for critical County needs,” he said in a statement.

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Irma has strengthened back into a Category 5 storm, as officials warned more than 5 million people that time was running out Friday and ordered them to evacuate ahead of the deadly hurricane as it followed a path that could take it from one end of the state to the other.

Forecasters also extended hurricane and storm surge warnings and watches farther north to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay.
