The Hillsborough County School Board has selected Addison Davis to serve as its new Superintendent.

Davis, who currently is the Superintendent of Clay County Public Schools, is the first superintendent hired from outside the Hillsborough County School District’s ranks since 1967.

Hillsborough County School officials are looking into the possibility that some grounds of King High School rest on what was a cemetery for indigent African Americans.

Standing at the speaker's lectern Tuesday night, Hillsborough County Athletic Director Lanness Robinson lauded the new partnership with three health care agencies that will put certified trainers in all 27 high schools.

All 27 Hillsborough County high schools will soon have an athletic trainer on campus.

The school board's decision on Tuesday to spend $270,000 for the program comes two months after an incoming freshman football player at Middleton High in Tampa died after taking part in conditioning drills.

An afternoon football practice turned tragic on Tuesday when a 14-year-old suddenly collapsed.

Tampa Police say the Middleton High School football team was just half an hour into conditioning drills when Hezekiah Walters fell to the ground. He was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

After 30 years of working for the Hillsborough County School district, Superintendent Jeff Eakins announced Monday that he will retire.

His last day in the role will be June 30, 2020.

A plan to boost teacher pay at 50 struggling schools was approved Tuesday by the Hillsborough County School Board.

Hundreds of educators could earn up to $13,000 more per year as part of the plan, which aims to ease an ongoing teacher shortage.

There are more than 200,000 students attending hundreds of schools across the Hillsborough County Public School district. The average age of those schools is 50 years old.

Now, the district is in the process of voluntarily testing drinking water for lead in those school buildings and its other facilities.

After months of negotiations, representatives from the Hillsborough County School District and Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association (HCTA) met at the HCTA building in West Tampa on Wednesday to sign a tentative agreement on teacher pay.

Residents of Hillsborough County can get an update on public school issues at a special town hall meeting on Wednesday.

School board member April Griffin says she initially planned the gathering to update the community on the district's financial woes.

"And then Parkland happened,” she said. “I wanted to educate the public on what we've already done in Hillsborough County for our students and for our staff's safety."

Hundreds of Hillsborough County school teachers protested at Tuesday's School Board meeting in Tampa.

Friction between teachers and administrators began surfacing last month when teachers were told they would not be getting a pay raise. Under a negotiated pay plan, teachers have received a four thousand dollar increase every three years if they attain high evaluation scores. 

But now, the school district says it cannot afford the $17 million dollars it would take to pay out those performance raises to teachers and support staff.
