Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Emergency management officials say it's important residents know which evacuation zone they live in. Florida residents should have an evacuation plan in place before a storm is on the radar.

When counties mandate evacuations, they will do it by zones A-E. The zones are set based on a home’s vulnerability to deadly storm surge, with Zone A being most vulnerable. Evacuation zones are not the same as FEMA flood zone designations.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that the Text to 9-1-1 technology would become available to residents effective immediately.

In a press conference held at the sheriff’s office in Brooksville, Sheriff Al Nienhuis said the year-long project allows sending texts to their agency if they are unable to call.

Customers with Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile service can send a text up to 140 characters to 911 in an emergency. The first message should include the location and the type of emergency.

Authorities say a man is back in a Florida jail for crashing his SUV into the building's entrance and causing a gas leak — two weeks after doing doughnuts in the facility's lawn and hitting a flag pole.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office reports that 31-year-old Michael Lee Roberts made a quick trip to the hospital after Sunday morning's crash before being returned to the jail that afternoon as an inmate. Technicians had the leak stopped within hours.

Hernando County Airport

When Kim Poppke represents the Hernando County Airport at trade shows, the conversation inevitably takes the same turn.

"Anywhere that I talk to anybody outside of this area, they don't know where Hernando County is," said Poppke, the airport's marketing and property coordinator. "Naturally, the next thing out of my mouth is, 'Well we're 35 minutes north of the Tampa airport.'"
