Voters in Pinellas County have rejected the Greenlight Pinellas transportation plan. 

The referendum included a one-cent sales tax increase to fund light rail and bus service improvements. It was rejected 62 percent to 38 percent. 

Opposition was headed by a group calling itself No Tax For Tracks.

One of the big local issues being voted on in the upcoming election is Greenlight Pinellas -- which would replace a property tax funding public transportation in Pinellas County with a one-cent sales tax.

That would fund an expansion of bus service and a light rail system from St. Petersburg to Clearwater.

Opponents say the tax is unfair, and in a recent email No Tax For Tracks claimed that the tax increase  is irreversible.

This November, voters will decide the fate of Greenlight Pinellas, which includes a one-cent increase in the county’s sales tax in exchange for a long-term plan for light rail and expanded bus service.

The Tampa Bay Partnership hosted a transportation forum Wednesday in St. Petersburg and the Greenlight Pinellas referendum received lots of attention.

The transportation forum included commissioners from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Polk Counties, and representatives from the region's transportation authorities.

The opposition has brought in a big-name consultant, who will take part in a debate Tuesday night in St. Petersburg. WUSF's Steve Newborn spoke to Randal O'Toole about why he rails against light rail.

Four Tampa Bay area mayors met for a public forum to show their unified support for the Greenlight Pinellas campaign. In November, Pinellas County voters will be asked to raise their sales tax to pay for more buses and a light rail system.

But the "public" forum didn’t quite live up to its billing, because the mayors did not take questions from the audience nor did they go into detail about the referendum.

This November, voters in Pinellas County will decide whether or not to raise the county's sales tax to 8 percent -- the highest in the state -- to fund Greenlight Pinellas.  That's the transit plan that would expand bus service and help build a light rail connecting Clearwater and St. Petersburg.
