The recent college admissions scandal exposed the role of wealth and privilege in gaining entry to America's best schools.

But its also helped bring attention to the issue of access to education for low income students and communities of color.

During his 27-year tenure as president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Freeman Hrabowski III has helped convert the school into one that’s recognized for its success in research and instruction. In particular, UMBC been noted in helping students from diverse backgrounds graduate and find careers.

The White House is withdrawing Obama-era guidance documents that encouraged schools and colleges to promote diversity through their admissions process.

The departments of Justice and Education announced on Tuesday that they have retracted several letters and memos that advised schools on how they could legally consider race in admissions and other decisions.
