In their bid to replace retiring U.S. Representative Dennis Ross, two Democratic candidates are receiving the support of national progressive organizations.

House Speaker Paul Ryan isn't the only longterm politician who is calling it quits.  Congressman Dennis Ross announced Tuesday he's ready to retire.

Ross has represented Florida's 15 Congressional District since 2013; and the 12th Congressional District before redistricting lines were redrawn. The Lakeland Republican serves an area that sprawls from Temple Terrace and Brandon through northern Polk County to Clermont.

The National Institutes of Health has an annual budget of around $30 billion, and since it provides most of the federal funding for research at universities and laboratories, it supports over 400,000 jobs across the country.

As the federal government shutdown drags on, a potentially pivotal group of House Republicans has entered the spotlight: the roughly 20 or so members who have publicly signaled their support for a so-called clean spending bill that would provide the funding necessary to reopen the government without strings attached.

Dennis Ross walked into his last election for Congress without an opposition. That won't be the case in next year's election. That's because a former television reporter today announced his candidacy for the seat now held by Ross.
