Two drivers accused of driving drunk were arrested over the weekend in Hillsborough County after nearly causing head-on collisions with law enforcement officers.

In the first incident around 4 a.m. Saturday, University of South Florida Police Officer Scott Parker avoided a collision on Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard at Orient Road.

It was a year ago today that four University of South Florida students were killed in a fiery collision with a drunk driver going the wrong way on I-275.

Since February, there have been five wrong-way crashes that have caused 11 deaths on highways in the Tampa area.

According to transportation experts and law enforcement, alcohol plays a huge role in the fatal wrong-way crashes.

A Ford Expedition was heading south in the northbound lanes of I-275 in Tampa at around two in the morning until it crashed into the car carrying four USF fraternity Sigma Beta Rho students.

The crash left all five dead. Officials know who the Expedition belongs to but haven't confirmed if the owner was the driver. It could take more than a month before officials know if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
