Manatee County commissioners are tasked again with deciding what to do with a Confederate monument that used to stand in front of the county courthouse.

When Lakeland resident Judy Smith walks by Munn Park she isn't bothered by the 26-foot tall Confederate Monument.

She's heard other people say it is racist or that it symbolizes slavery. But when Smith looks at the Confederate soldier on top of the marble memorial, that's not what she sees.

Confederate flags and memorials have become a point of political controversy in Tampa Bay and beyond.

Congressman John Rutherford, R-FL4, said Thursday that cities grappling with whether to remove Confederate monuments should put the question to the ballot. He spoke to WJCT at an unrelated event in St. Augustine.

Activists plan to peacefully protest a Confederate monument in the city of Bradenton on Monday evening. But after a white supremacist rally in Virginia over a similar issue turned deadly, Manatee County law enforcement officials said they want to make sure the public is safe.

The president of a Southwest Florida NAACP chapter says a white supremacist rally in Virginia has prompted him to resume efforts to remove Confederate monuments.

James Muwakkil leads the NAACP chapter in Lee County, which is named for Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The chapter's 2015 efforts to change Lee's portrait in county commission chambers were unsuccessful.
