A second professional football league is supposed to come to Tampa in 2020. But one local sports marketing expert says its likelihood of success isn’t high.

Last week, Tampa Bay Rays Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg said a plan to build a new baseball stadium in the Tampa neighborhood of Ybor City was dead.

The Wall Street investor and other team officials said it wasn’t clear where most of the estimated $892 million for a new ballpark would come from, but a University of South Florida sports marketing expert said Sternberg should shoulder much of the blame for the failure.

University of South Florida athletic director Mark Harlan, who had been the subject of rumors he was moving on to other jobs almost since the day he was hired four years ago, is taking the same job at Utah.

In its previous two editions, the University of South Florida Sport and Entertainment Lecture Series has featured a variety of guests from both worlds, ranging from agent David Falk and BET co-founder Sheila Johnson to ESPN analyst Andrew Brandt and Women's Tennis Association CEO Stacy Allaster.

This year is no different, as the series welcomes a trio of speakers, including executives from the NBA and WNBA and pizza magnate "Papa John."
