The pending retirement of University of South Florida president Judy Genshaft has started what will likely be a nationwide search for her successor. Genshaft's predecessor - Betty Castor - says that person will have to have equal experience in the academic and business communities. That's because much of the president's time is spent on fundraising.

There is a renewed call to make Florida’s Education Secretary an elected position – again.

The state’s top educator used to be elected statewide and served as a member of the Florida Cabinet. The cabinet also served as the Florida Board of Education.


Former University of South Florida President Betty Castor has been elected chair of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

The Tampa Tribune reports Castor will supervise the State Department's international exchange program, which gives out around 1,700 Fulbright Scholarships a year.

Sam Gibbons was re-elected to Congress 16 times, from the 1960s through 1997. Before that, he served in the Florida Legislature, and was instrumental in getting the University of South Florida established. Former USF president Betty Castor says one reason for his longevity is Gibbons remembered that all politics is local.
