Governor Ron DeSantis signed a tax bill Wednesday that is estimated to save Florida families nearly $47 million during two sales tax holidays. Another part of the bill is expected to save commercial real estate renters more than $64 million by reducing the tax rate.

The new school year is fast approaching, and many students are still in need of school supplies, school physicals and immunizations. Organizations across the bay area are offering free events that help families meet some of those needs.

With the new school year around the corner, members of Hillsborough County's Back-to-School Coalition are trying to ensure students get their immunization shots, even if they're not able to afford it.

Public school students went back to class today in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Manatee Counties. Next week, students in Pasco and Polk Counties start the 2016-17 school year. And for students in Sarasota County, the start date is August 22.

And all of these students are heading to school in cars, on bikes and on foot. For those getting to school on foot, they might not know that Florida is among the deadliest in the nation.

At the beginning of each school year, making new students feel welcome and building a rapport with them is a big part of getting off to a smooth start. And at one Pinellas County middle school, teachers and staff aren't waiting for the students to come to them.

It's no secret that not every student is excited about going back to school at the end of summer.

On the first day of school some will be waiting at the bus stop with a backpack of new notebooks and a stomach full of butterflies.

There are just a few days left for Florida’s 10-day Back-to-School Sales Tax holiday.

The 2015-2016 school year could begin as early as August 10. That means families could have to cut vacations short. State law prohibits schools from starting earlier than Labor Day, but the holiday falls in the second week of September, making districts antsy.
