Attorney General Weighs In On Death Penalty Changes

Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office is urging the Florida Supreme Court to reverse course on decisions that allowed dozens of convicted murderers to have their death sentences reconsidered. 

Democrats in Congress and an overwhelming majority of the American public are eagerly awaiting the expected release this week of the Mueller report.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold confirmation hearings for President Trump's pick for attorney general on Jan. 15 and 16.

If confirmed, William Barr will replace acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, who was appointed after Jeff Sessions was forced out in November.

In an unusual move, Attorney General Pam Bondi on Sunday publicly criticized Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen for not pursuing an investigation into alleged irregularities in the handling of election ballots in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The race for Florida's next attorney general will be between two people from the Tampa area, a former Republican Hillsborough County judge and a Democratic state representative.

The race for governor isn't the only statewide political contest during primary season. Florida Republicans and Democrats will also choose their favorite candidate to run for the state's top prosecutor, the Attorney General.
