The Air Force’s Space Command is looking for a new home. Eight Florida communities want the new headquarters and have submitted bids. In total, 54 communities nationwide are vying to host the location which promises new jobs and economic development in host communities.

Vice President Mike Pence addressed the cadets in person, but parents and others were limited to watching the ceremony online.

As a gift to the state of Florida, U.S. Air Force Band staff arranger Master Sergeant Tadd Russo put together an original march, “Okeechobee Pasodoble(e),” which references Florida’s history of Spanish settlement and its Native American roots -- and includes nods to songs he says should be well known to Floridians.

Playing it for the last time this weekend, the band will end its Florida tour with three concerts in the Tampa Bay area.

The famous structure and popular tourist site will undergo a renovation project that's expected to last almost four years.

The $325 million dollar plan is funded by private companies and is expected to result in renovations to 16,000 homes on seven Army posts.

Could Florida be the base for a new branch of the military to handle threats in space?

Last week, Governor Ron DeSantis asked President Trump to place the headquarters for the new Space Force Combatant Command in Cape Canaveral, tweeting that it would be “a logical fit” for the state.

WMFE’s Space Reporter Brendan Byrne said Friday on The Florida Roundup that having Space Command headquarters in the state would indeed be a natural progression for a fast growing space industry in Florida.

Facing a shortage of pilots, the Air Force is experimenting with ways to make training programs faster and less expensive.

President Trump Monday announced his intention to create a "space force" that would oversee the military's activities off-world.

"When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space," Trump said at a meeting of the National Space Council, which oversees the nation's space policy. "We must have American dominance in space. So important."

During the Cold War, U.S. planes accidentally dropped nuclear bombs on the east coast, in Europe, and elsewhere. "Dumb luck" prevented a historic catastrophe.

Every spring, a national military family support group called Operation Homefront honors outstanding children whose parents are serving in the military. Six were selected this year, one for each branch of service.

The 2018 Air Force Military Child of the Year is from Tampa. Eve Glenn graduated recently as valedictorian of Robinson High School. It was the 11th school she'd attended.

A Tampa F-16 pilot -- killed in a crash April 3, 2013 while deployed in Afghanistan -- is the focus of a TV series called Brush of Honor which airs tonight at 9 on the INSP Network.

The episode features Air Force Captain James Steel who was born in Tampa while his father, retired Major  Gen. Robert Steel,  flew F-16s at MacDill Air Force Base.
