abortion restrictions

What would the U.S. look like without Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that legalized abortion nationwide?

That’s the question now that President Donald Trump has chosen conservative Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Republican legislators sent Iowa's governor a bill early Wednesday that would ban most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, usually around six weeks of pregnancy, propelling the state overnight to the front of a push among conservative statehouses jockeying to enact the nation's most restrictive regulations on the procedure.

The Florida Supreme Court is preparing to rule on whether to allow a new abortion restriction to take effect.  The measure requires women wait 24 hours after an initial consultation before receiving treatment.

Supreme Court Sets Arguments On Abortion Waiting Period

Aug 17, 2016

The Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments Nov. 1 in a closely watched case about a 2015 law that would require women to wait 24 hours before having abortions.

Florida's new law that places restrictions on abortion clinics is going to remain blocked for now.

Florida Renews Defense of Abortion Restrictions

Jul 20, 2016

Nearly three weeks after a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against new abortion restrictions, Attorney General Pam Bondi's office on Monday filed a document disputing Planned Parenthood's arguments that the restrictions are unconstitutional.

With the U.S. Supreme Court striking down Texas abortion restrictions, attention is turning to Florida where a similar measure is set to take effect Friday.  The law’s backers are confident their legislation will survive a court challenge of its own.

Even with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, Wednesday could mark a potential turning point for the Supreme Court on the subject of abortion. At issue is whether a new Texas law imposes restrictions that unconstitutionally limit a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy.

Last June, a federal appeals court upheld the law. If the Supreme Court agrees, it would mean a dramatic cutback on abortion rights across the country, and potentially a steppingstone toward the reversal of Roe v. Wade.

Abortion Waiting Period Appealed As State Eyes More Restrictions

Mar 1, 2016

Abortion battles are playing out across state government.

After an appeals-court ruling Friday, the American Civil Liberties Union quickly asked the Florida Supreme Court to reinstate an injunction against a 2015 law that requires 24-hour waiting periods before women can have abortions.

The Florida Legislature is moving forward with a bill that could restrict abortion access. But similar measures have been struck down in other states.
