The 2018 Florida primary was one of the most surprising elections in modern memory. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum surged from behind to become the Democratic nominee for governor and Donald Trump-backed Ron DeSantis took home a decisive win over Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.

After trailing in the polls throughout his entire primary campaign, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum became the Democratic nominee for governor last week. 

Florida's primary election was full of surprises. WUSF reporters Steve Newborn, Mark Schreiner and Roberto Roldan have been following the races and were out covering campaign events on primary night. They sit down with host Robin Sussingham to talk about the evening's upsets and drama.

State officials report almost 2 million early voting and mail-in ballots have been received – surpassing totals from previous years.

Governor:

The star-studded endorsements Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum has snagged in his quest to become Florida’s first black governor go on and on, capped by progressive patriarch U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine greeted Leon County voters casting early ballots Wednesday. The gubernatorial candidate says he’s knocking on doors around Florida during the home stretch to the primary election.

Gubernatorial candidates are making their final pitches to voters ahead of Tuesday’s primary. Democrat Gwen Graham returned to Tallahassee Thursday to vote and rally her supporters amid polls showing Graham and Phil Levine tied as front-runners to win the Democratic Gubernatorial primary.

Fla. Atlantic University Poll Shows DeSantis, Putnam In Tight Race

The race between Adam Putnam and Ron DeSantis for the Republican nomination for governor is tightening, according to a poll released Tuesday by Florida Atlantic University.

Florida Democrats should find out by Friday if one of their candidates for attorney general could be knocked out of Tuesday’s primary election, which has already seen more than 500,000 Democratic ballots cast.

The race for governor is not the only statewide political contest during primary season. Republicans and Democrats will also choose their favorite candidate to run for the state's top consumer watchdog: the Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Floridians are running out of time to request and turn in their vote-by-mail ballots for next Tuesday’s Primary Election.

Gubernatorial Candidate Andrew Gillum is claiming he’s been unfairly targeted by an FBI probe investigating public corruption in Tallahassee. Yet that's not stopping him from rallying his base during a campaign stop at Klemen Plaza Monday.

The race for governor isn't the only statewide political contest during primary season. Florida Republicans and Democrats will also choose their favorite candidate to run for the state's top prosecutor, the Attorney General.


Florida’s top leadership offices are up for grabs this year and one of the largest jobs is overseeing the state’s multi-billion dollar agriculture and consumer services industries. There are seven candidates vying to succeed Adam Putnam as Agriculture Commissioner. Five of them recently appeared before several South Florida editorial boards to make their cases to voters.
