Gillum Concedes Governor's Race

Andrew Gillum, who tried to energize Florida's young and minority voters through a Democratic coalition seeking to end two decades of Republican control of the governor's office, ended his hard-fought campaign Saturday as the state's first black nominee for the post.

The state Senate Race between Democrat Janet Cruz and Republican incumbent Dana Young will now go to a manual recount. Results submitted by the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections shows Cruz had a lead of 376 votes over Young.

In Florida when a race is close a candidate cannot “call for a recount.” Instead, it all comes down to math. If any candidates are within half a percentage of each other, Florida law requires a recount. Right now that’s the case for the U.S. Senate race, as well as the contests for state agriculture commissioner and governor.

All 120 Florida House seats were up for grabs in 2018 and a few races offered a few firsts for candidates in Tampa Bay.

Republican Ray Blacklidge and Democrat Jennifer Webb battled for an open seat in Pinellas County’s House District 69 for the seat being vacated by Republican Kathleen Peters.

In the end, the win went to Democrat Webb who will become the first openly gay woman in the Florida Legislature.

Most Florida felons who have finished their sentences will be able to vote again in future elections.

Voters on Tuesday approved Amendment 4, which says that most felons will automatically have their voting rights restored when they complete their sentences or go on probation. The amendment exempts those convicted of sex offenses and murder.

Despite Democrats' hopes for a 'blue wave,' all U.S. House seats in Tampa Bay remained unchanged Tuesday night with Republicans taking a decisive win in the only hotly contested seat.

Hillsborough County voters approved a one-cent sales tax to improve roads and public transportation on Tuesday.

The initiative, along with a half-cent sales tax approved for public schools, brings the county's sales tax to 8.5 percent, which is the highest in the state.
