Nate Intensifying and Accelerating Toward the Gulf

Tropical Storm Nate has moved back over the warm waters of the Caribbean and is accelerating toward the Gulf of Mexico. Nate is forecast to become a hurricane and make landfall in southeast Louisiana or southern Mississippi Saturday night. 

A second industry group has filed a legal challenge against an effort by Gov. Rick Scott's administration to require nursing homes and assisted-living facilities to quickly install generators that can power air-conditioning systems.

Nursing Homes Say Adding Generators 'Huge Challenge'

Florida nursing-home officials made clear Friday they think it is unrealistic — if not impossible — to carry out a demand by Gov. Rick Scott that facilities quickly install generators that can power air-conditioning systems.

Residents in cities and counties across Tampa Bay heeded the call to place storm debris on the curbs of their homes. But now, some are worrying the debris still hasn't been collected.

Before Hurricane Maria made a direct hit on St. Croix, the island was serving as the hub for recovery efforts from earlier storms in other U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

A resident of St. Croix for more than three decades, Ditty Layton, survived Maria inside her home on the East End. Layton said, remarkably, she has not lost cell phone service and was reaching out to friends in Florida.

Most of Puerto Rico is without power Wednesday after Hurricane Maria slammed into the island as a Category 4 storm.

Dozens Of Nursing Homes Still Lack Power

Dozens of nursing homes continued Thursday to lack electricity or had been evacuated because of Hurricane Irma, as the state grappled with the deaths of eight residents of a Broward County facility that did not have air conditioning.

It’s the middle of the day in Deland, a city between Orlando and Daytona Beach. Temperatures today are in the 90s.
