Florida Matters: Food Traditions

During this Thanksgiving week, we're taking a second listen to our show on  food, family and traditions. From passing on the recipe for French Canadian meat pie, to making the perfect rice and meeting the bakers who make award-winning pies in Lakeland, our reporters are taking you into the kitchen. 

A Puerto Rican Thanksgiving Meal by Yoselis Ramos was honored in the 2015 Edward R. Murrow Awards for Large Market Radio Writing.

As Robin Sussingham reports in Reececliff's Pies A Lakeland TraditionReececliff Family Diner in Lakeland has been turning out its award winning pies since the 1930s, and lots of families rely on them every year for their Thanksgiving dessert. The restaurant has been operating in the Dixieland neighborhood since 1934.

Chef Mabel Guzman, featured in Can Chefs Aid Fight Against Disease? by Lottie Watts, continues to lead cooking demonstrations at the Humana Guidance Center in Kissimmee. The center in Zephyrhills will have classes with Chef Jennifer Wead, the owner of Rose Café and Catering in Zephyrhills. The next class is Dec. 9 at 12 p.m. 

We also visit Bobbie O'Brien's kitchen as she makes a French Canadian meat pie, and hear from Susan Giles Wantuck about how to preserve family recipes.
