Greg Steube Wants To Replace Tom Rooney In Congress

State Sen. Greg Steube

A familiar name in Sarasota County wants to replace outgoing Congressman Tom Rooney. Greg Steube, a Sarasota Republican who has served eight years in the Florida Legislature, wants to move to Washington, D.C.

Steube is a staunch conservative who is one of the strongest gun rights advocates in the state Senate. Despite the recent uproar over the Parkland school shooting, his NRA Bona fides are likely to play well in Rooney's district, which sprawls over parts of nine counties, including Polk, Sarasota, Hardee and DeSoto.  President Trump carried the district by 27 percentage points.

A statement on his Facebook page said, "As a conservative, pro-life, pro 2nd Amendment, anti-illegal immigration fighter for our Constitutional rights, I will proudly support President Trump and his agenda in Washington."

Steube has already locked up the endorsement of a long list of Republicans.
