Citrus County Sheriff Kenneth M. Prendergast fatally struck a pedestrian on U.S. 19 in Hernando County on Wednesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to troopers, Prendergast, 62, was driving northbound in an unmarked sheriff’s office vehicle, south of Woodland Water Boulevard, in the outside lane when Ronnie Anthony Heath, 59, walked into his path.

Heath, a Citrus County resident, was killed at the scene, troopers said.

Alcohol was not a factor, troopers said, and Prendergast doesn’t face any charges.

Prendergast was elected Citrus County Sheriff in 2016.
