The St. Petersburg City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to let state lawmakers know they support Visit Florida and Enterprise Florida.

The agencies work to promote tourism and business in Florida.

Mayor Rick Kriseman spoke in favor of both Visit Florida and Enterprise Florida.

"Tourism is such a large part of our economic development in the state of Florida,” he said. “To not have an organization that actively promotes our state is to put us at a significant disadvantage, equally so with Enterprise Florida.”

Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran wants to do away with those agencies, which he calls "government waste."
