Video: One Year After Face-Eating Attack, Victim Ronald Poppo Is 'Grateful'
It was one of the most bizarre stories of last year -- even for Florida.
On May 26, 2012,Ronald Poppo was homeless and living on Miami's MacArthur Causeway when he was attacked by a naked man who bit off parts of his face. The crime left Poppo without his left eye, his nose and much of the skin on his face. It also left the suspect, Rudy Eugene, shot dead by police.
Now, nearly a year later, Poppo is speaking publicly for the first time. On Tuesday, Jackson Memorial Perdue Medical Center, where Poppo continues to undergo treatment, released a video that shows him wearing a Miami Heat cap, strumming a guitar and thanking the community for its support.
"He's had a long year, but he's managed to cope quite well with what's happened to him," one of Poppo's caretakers said Tuesday during a press conference updating the community on his condition.
Well-wishers have been responding to the video on Twitter, using #wishes4poppo.
