Florida Matters: Live Music Tour Of Tampa Bay

WUSF Public Media

Throughout this past year, members of WUSF 89.7 and Classical WSMR have been highlighting live music that makes the Tampa Bay Area a little more special as part of our ongoing Art Populi series.

This week on Florida Matters we hear some of those stories.

We start off with a visit to a restaurant in downtown St. Petersburg where jazz reigns every Monday night.

We take an unconventional history tour of death metal music, which got its start in Tampa.

We talk with leaders at New Music New College, which has been “fostering a conversation about contemporary music and performance” through concerts and events for nearly two decades in Sarasota.

We meet members of the Lumina Youth Choirs, one of the best known choral groups in the Tampa Bay area.

We conclude our live music tour of Tampa Bay with a tribute band that puts their own unique flair on songs you may never get to hear live.

What are some of your favorite ways to enjoy live music in the area? Share your thoughts with us on Facebook, Twitter or by emailing FloridaMatters@wusf.org.

I cover health care for WUSF and the statewide journalism collaborative Health News Florida. I’m passionate about highlighting community efforts to improve the quality of care in our state and make it more accessible to all Floridians. I’m also committed to holding those in power accountable when they fail to prioritize the health needs of the people they serve.

I took my first photography class when I was 11. My stepmom begged a local group to let me into the adults-only class, and armed with a 35 mm disposable camera, I started my journey toward multimedia journalism.
In 2010, after spending 28 years in commercial FM radio, I finally got the opportunity to work at the station I listen to.
