Have you ever looked up at the sky and found the artificial light was blocking out the stars? Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales is drawing attention to this issue on Saturday night.

There will be much to do at Bok Tower's Harmony Dark Sky Star Party on Saturday night, Feb. 18, including several night hikes, sessions with folks from NASA, and author Paul Bogard, who wrote "The End of Night," plus telescopes from planetariums, said Education Director Tricia Martin.

Martin said, “You know a starry night is one of the most magical experiences and we may not get that, but we will proceed with the event whether it’s clear or cloudy, because there will be so many things going on.”

Martin said there will be Earth science events for smaller children, and nocturnal animals, such as owls and bats.

The International Dark Sky Association tested the sky above Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales ahead of this festival and found light pollution to be only slightly higher than the darkest point on the earth. That means you won't need a telescope to see the Milky Way there on a clear night.
