How To Follow Through On Goals

Susan Giles Wantuck

It's a tradition to try to set goals to start the new year.  But why is the follow-through sometimes a bust?

Dr. Brenton Wiernik is an assistant professor of industrial-organizational psychology at the University of South Florida.

"When we're thinking about should I take on this new project, should I take on this new activity, we kind of have to look at as saying, well, if I had to do it tomorrow or next week, would I say yes?" Wiernik said. "And if you wouldn't say yes to doing it next week, you probably shouldn't say yes to doing it in the future.”

He says in the future, you'll be just as busy with other things as you are now.

Wiernik said the key to achieving goals to be very specific about setting them. For example, if you plan to learn embroidery, you have to carve out 30 minutes a week on a set day -- to work on that goal.

I love telling stories about my home state. And I hope they will help you in some way and maybe even lift your spirits.
