Bucs' Schiano Future Up in the Air

Associated Press

For most of the season, head coach Greg Schiano's future with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been in question.

Now, while various media outlets report contradictory outlooks, there are reports that Schiano has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the Penn State University head coaching position.

Hours before the Bucs wrap up their season against the New Orleans Saints, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer and ESPN's Chris Mortensen both said that Schiano won't be fired by Bucs' owners, the Glazer family (no relation to the Fox reporter). However, Max Luckan of CBS Tampa cites a team source who says those reports are "inaccurate."

Meanwhile, the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Schiano may be one of the prime targets if Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien leaves for an NFL job, adding that Penn State Athletic Director Dave Joyner may fly to Tampa to speak to Schiano in person. Schiano has college coaching experience, leading Rutgers from 2001 to 2011.

And, as if this whole saga wasn't absurd enough, Jason Cole of the National Football Post reports that if Schiano leaves the Bucs, by his choice or not, the Glazers may pursue New York Jets' head coach Rex Ryan - that is providing the Jets let him go.
