09/21/2018: Competing Education Plans On The Campaign Trail; Poverty In Florida

In this week’s Florida Roundup we looked at dueling education plans in the race for governor from Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum.

Education reporters Jessica Bakeman from WLRN and Jeff Solocheck from the Tampa Bay Times joined us.

We examined the number of people living in poverty in Florida, which has dropped in the state since the Great Recession of 2008. Our guests providing perspective on the issue were:

  • Barbara Peters Smith, a Sarasota Herald-Tribune reporter that focuses on aging issues
  • Matt Dixon, a senior reporter for Politico
  • Patti Mazzeiwith The New York Times

We also looked at the issue of race entering into the gubernatorial contest after DeSantis donor Steven Alembik admitted to tweeting a racial slur against former President Barack Obama.
