State Workers Must Keep Paying 3% for Pension

The Florida Supreme Court has ruled 4-3 to uphold a law requiring public employees to contribute 3 percent of their pay to the state's pension plan. The decision, which is seen as vindication for Gov. Rick Scott and the Republican-controlled Legislature, reverses an earlier judge's ruling that the move violated the collective bargaining and contract rights of about 600,000 teachers, state and county employees.
The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the Legislature's requirement that state employees contribute 3 percent of their pay, overturning a lower-court decision last year that had held it was unconstitutional. The ruling had been eagerly awaited by state officials, who feared that if they had to give the money back it would knock a $2 billion hole in the budget.
