Polk County Supervisor of Elections

Voters in a number of cities throughout Polk County will go to the polls Tuesday for a variety of municipal elections.

“There are eight city elections including Bartow, Davenport, Eagle Lake, Frostproof, Haines City, Lake Alfred, Mulberry and Polk City. In some of those cities, we have city commission races and in others. we have referendums that the city residents will be voting on.” said Lori Edwards, Supervisor of Elections for Polk County.

Donna Shalala, the former University of Miami president and Health and Human Services secretary, is officially running as a Democrat to replace retiring Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, according to Federal Election Commission paperwork filed Monday.

Shalala, 77, has never run for elected office, but her presence shakes up a crowded Democratic primary in a district that includes most of Miami Beach, downtown Miami and coastal Miami-Dade County. The district favors Democrats, as Hillary Clinton defeated President Donald Trump by 19.7 percentage points there in 2016.

The debate over guns, the "me too" movement against sexual misconduct and the federal government's handling of hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico will give Florida Democrats victories up and down the November ballot, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson predicted during a meeting with state House Democrats on Thursday.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Republican Adam Putnam made a campaign stop in Fort Myers Tuesday in his bid to be the next governor of Florida. 

 

BOCA RATON --- Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis walked across the stage Monday as the late rocker Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” played in a crowded room at a Boca Raton hotel.

The 2018 Governor’s race could lead to Florida’s Senate Budget Chairman and House Speaker squaring off against each other in the primary. But, for now, Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran says he does not think the campaign trail will affect the legislature’s handling of the upcoming year’s budget.

Just as the doors close on the presidential race, candidates are lining up to run for Florida governor in 2018.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is the first Democrat to announce his candidacy. There’s also been speculation that Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has his eye on the governor’s mansion.
