The Florida Board of Governors on Thursday unanimously endorsed a proposal to reunify the University of South Florida with two branch campuses in St. Petersburg and Sarasota.

In the history of debating, a recent contest held at the Hardee Correctional Institution had one of the more interesting lineup of participants.

On one side were four college students who had never taken part in a debate before. On the other, wearing matching uniforms - dark blue and grey - were a quartet of inmates serving life sentences.

By the time the contest was over, the participants, as well as much of the audience, knew that they had experienced something they probably never would again.

Stetson University College of Law and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee are a little over thirty miles apart. But under a new admissions agreement reached between the two schools, they’re closer than ever.

Students wanting to pursue a law degree can now enroll at USF Sarasota-Manatee, take classes there and then have the admissions process into Stetson streamlined – as well as maybe receive a scholarship for the Gulfport law school.

There’s a storefront along Main Street in Lakewood Ranch, a planned community between Sarasota and Bradenton, where future restaurant and hospitality employees are learning their chops.

It’s the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Culinary Innovation Lab, and beginning this semester, every few weeks, it transforms into the Bulls Bistro.

Almost 3,000 students will wrap up the summer - and a major step in their education - by receiving degrees this weekend from the University of South Florida.

The three schools of USF System will confer degrees to approximately 2,924 graduates, with around 1,500 marching in a pair of ceremonies at the USF Sun Dome Saturday.


Teddy Mullet has always liked building things by hand. While his cousin bought a kit to build a laser, Mullet decided to buy the parts separately and make his own. So when he was in his junior year at Sarasota Christian School, he was thinking of applying to University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.
