The University of South Florida has formed a partnership with a network of hospitals to train more doctors in the Tampa Bay area.

In December of 2011, Frank and Carol Morsani gave $20 million to the University of South Florida for a brand new medical college that would bear the name of the Tampa auto dealer and his wife.

Now, after six years of site selection, planning and infrastructure improvements, construction has finally begun on the USF Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute.

Jeff Vinik's ties to the University of South Florida continue to get stronger, as a Muma College of Business program now bears his family's name.

The Vinik Sport and Entertainment Management Program was started five years ago with the Tampa Bay Lightning owner's assistance. Since then, USF officials say he and his wife, Penny, have contributed more than $6 million to the graduate-level initiative.

The University of South Florida will ask lawmakers for an additional $21 million to complete funding for its downtown Tampa medical school and heart institute.

University of South Florida System President Judy Genshaft has made her first public statements following the departure of the leader of USF St. Petersburg.

And while the agreement between the university and former Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska means there's not a lot Genshaft can say, she repeatedly emphasized the university is not looking backwards.

Tampa General Hospital is already billed as one of the busiest organ transplant centers in the country.

Now, in conjunction with the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine and its South Tampa Center for Advanced Medical Care, they’re creating what they call a new model for advanced organ transplantation.

Sixty feet beneath the water’s surface in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary sits one of the world’s three undersea research laboratories.

And as you read this, the Aquarius Reef Base is home to an international crew of researchers, including Dominic D’Agostino, an associate professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine.

When Florida Gov. Rick Scott got out his veto pen for the 2017-18 state budget last week, about $9.5 million earmarked for University of South Florida projects - plus $4.3 million for a forensic research training facility USF anthropologists will play a part in -  went away.

But university officials were looking on the bright side after a Board of Trustees meeting Thursday.

When the 164 members of this year’s University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine graduating class donned their caps and gowns last month, they were students.

Now, when they put their white lab coats on, they are doctors.

During the commencement ceremony at Tampa’s Straz Center, the new physicians heard from Dr. Victor J. Dzau, the president of the National Academy of Medicine.

Some students in the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine experienced the "luck of the Irish" this past Friday, as they got their first choice of hospital where they'll do their residencies.

It was all part of "Match Day," where students open an envelope that sets them on their career path for the next three to seven years, depending on their specialty.

While construction of the new University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine and the USF Health Heart Institute is expected to start this August, there's now a better idea of what the final product should look like.

USF unveiled preliminary renderings of the nearly $153 million facility Tuesday.

You would think after playing defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for nine years, and then 11 more as a Tampa firefighter, John Cannon might have back pain.

A total of 172 University of South Florida medical  students joined thousands of their counterparts from around the country in finding out what hospital or medical center they'll be working at at events last week.

The Florida Legislature is getting closer to finalizing its proposed budget, and the State University System stands to pick up a sizable amount of money for construction projects next year.

The $713 million approved during the House and Senate appropriations conference Sunday includes $22.5 million for the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.
