A University of South Florida football player is in stable condition after being shot Saturday night in what Tampa police call a "road-rage incident."

Hassan Childs, 22, a senior defensive back from Kissimmee, was shot three times in the incident at Eagles Point Apartments in the 14000 block of 46th Street, just north of the USF Golf Course.

According to a Tampa police statement, Childs was shot by Jovanni Jimenez, 26, after allegedly pointing a gun at Jimenez and his wife. Jimenez, a Tampa resident, told police he shot Childs in self defense.

Police in Tampa say a burglary suspect threw a flaming accelerant on an officer and a police dog before he was shot by that officer.

Responding to a surge in gun deaths, Tampa police say they will increase patrols through East and West Tampa, where a higher concentration of the gun violence is happening.

"It's just this particular spike in violent crime is obviously very concerning so we're doing even more than what we traditionally do," Andrea Davis with the Tampa Police Department said. "We want to have that very visible police presence to deter some of this violent crime."

A federal grant received last year will cover overtime pay, she said.

Law enforcement officials are continuing a search near the USF Tampa campus and New Tampa area for a suspect in a series of home invasions and violent incidents Thursday night.

The suspect was reportedly tracked down to the woods north of 42nd Street and south of Amberly Drive in Tampa. Law enforcement said deep water in the woods is making the search difficult, but their dogs can track suspects through the water.

"The thing about the water is you've gotta come out somewhere," Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department Spokesman Major J.R. Burton told the Tampa Bay Times.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's officials say the incidents began around 11 p.m. when a man forced his way into an apartment at Cambridge Woods Apartments near 42nd Street north of East Fletcher Avenue. He reportedly bound four men and sexually assaulted four women inside the apartment. He told the victims not to call the police for half an hour, which they reportedly did out of fear.

Dontae Morris, who is suspected of killing Tampa police officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis during a 2010 traffic stop, will go to trial in November. The high-profile case will likely be tried in Orlando, with jurors from Orange County. If convicted, Morris could face the death penalty. Morris, 27, is already serving a life sentence for the 2010 shooting death of Rodney Jones outside a Tampa club.

Twitter

Police officers are just like us:  They drink bottled water. They have dogs. They even tweet.

Starting Friday at 8 a.m., cops around the world will take part in a 24-hour-tweet-a-thon to raise their social media profiles. (Of course, with all the different time zones participating, the "day" will be more like 43 hours. But this is a news website, not a calculus class.)  The virtual ridealong is organized by ConnectedCOPS.net, which bills itself as "law enforcement's social partner on the web."  Here's a map of all the participating agencies:
