Father Accused In Bridge Death Still Incompetent For Trial

Feb 24, 2016

A judge says a man accused of throwing his daughter from a Tampa Bay bridge is still not competent to stand trial.

It's the third time since January 2015 that a judge has declared John Jonchuck mentally incapable of standing trial for the death of 5-year-old Phoebe Jonchuck.

It was Friday, May 9, 1980 at 7:33 a.m. when the freighter Summit Venture rammed into the Sunshine Skyway Bridge during a severe storm.  The roadway above crashed into the waters of Tampa Bay. Though the blinding rain, drivers in the southbound lanes were unable to see the missing roadway ahead.  Six cars, a truck, and a Greyhound Bus plunged into the waters below, and 35 people were killed.

When something bad happens on the waters near south Saint Petersburg - say a boat breaks down or someone jumps from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge - odds are pretty good that the Eckerd College Search and Rescue Team (EC-SAR) will be the first ones on scene.

The St. Petersburg-based school has the only all-volunteer student marine search and rescue team anywhere in the country.

It still stands as the U.S. Coast Guard's worst peacetime disaster. And 35 years later survivors, family members and supporters still gather near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge each year to remember the sinking of the Blackthorn.

On Wednesday morning, a memorial service was held to remember the 23 crew members who lost their lives when the Blackthorn sank near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The ship sank when it collided with a tanker, the Capricorn.
