Scott Expands Emergency Declaration, Asks For Federal Aid

With Hurricane Michael expected to blast Florida this week, Gov. Rick Scott on Monday expanded a state of emergency to include 35 counties and asked President Donald Trump for a declaration that would help provide federal assistance. 

Last week, Governor Rick Scott declared a State of Emergency due to red tide, which activated the “Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program.” It's a short-term, interest-free loan intended to help small businesses impacted by red tide and the Lake Okeechobee algal bloom, but they may come due before the red tide is even gone.

Gov. Rick Scott issued an emergency order Monday and provided $1.5 million to help clean up water and bring back tourists to Southwest Florida after the latest outbreak of red tide.

Latvala Asks Scott To Free Up $20M For Opioid Fight

Saying the “opioid crisis presents an existential threat,” Senate Appropriations Chairman Jack Latvala on Monday asked Gov. Rick Scott to use executive authority to provide $20 million for opioid-related services.

Florida service providers are wasting no time taking advantage of nearly $30 million in federal money for addressing the opioid epidemic.

Governor Rick Scott’s recent emergency declaration means some 3,000 addicts in Florida will soon be getting access to opioid blockers like methadone, suboxone and naltrexone, health officials say.

With widespread algae blooms causing beaches to be closed in Martin County, Gov. Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for Martin and St. Lucie counties on Wednesday.

Today, Governor Rick Scott declared a State of Emergency for Florida in preparation for Tropical Storm Erika.

A bill allowing people to carry a gun without a license during a mandatory evacuation as part of a declared state of emergency cleared hurdles in both the House and Senate Wednesday.
