University of South Florida System President Judy Genshaft has made her first public statements following the departure of the leader of USF St. Petersburg.

And while the agreement between the university and former Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska means there's not a lot Genshaft can say, she repeatedly emphasized the university is not looking backwards.

Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska's split with the University of South Florida St. Petersburg came as a result from how she handled student evacuations in the run-up to Hurricane Irma - and where she said she was during the storm itself.

University of South Florida St. Petersburg Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska is out after four years on the job.

USF President Judy Genshaft never mentioned Wisniewska in a statement she sent to USFSP faculty and students Saturday afternoon:

Students are moving in this week to their homes for the school year at the University of South Florida.

While there are a number of new halls in "The Village" opening on the Tampa campus, St. Petersburg is packed beyond capacity, with 104 students living in a nearby hotel and apartment complexes that the university reached agreements with over the summer.

Sridhar Sundaram, dean of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg Kate Tiedemann College of Business, says he and other university officials were recently touring the school’s brand new home, the Lynn Pippenger Hall, when he approached two awestruck students.

The goal, according to school officials, is for USF St. Petersburg to have 10,000 students enrolled by 2025. But to turn the campus from a commuter school to one where students live and study is going to take the addition of residence hall beds - a lot of them.

The school is taking steps towards the addition of a new residence hall by seeking out a suitor who will finance and build a facility under a public-private partnership (P3).

Until recently, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg’s offerings for student veterans were limited to say the least.

According to Milton White, it was basically him – a single Student Services employee – along with a table outside his office covered with pamphlets. A good portion of the time, he’d have to send student vets to the Tampa campus for assistance.

He said that’s not the ideal way to help someone transitioning from one important chapter of their life to another.

USF St. Petersburg and Duke Energy have "flipped the switch" on what they're calling one of the largest and most efficient solar arrays in the city.

The system sits on top of a seven-story campus parking garage on Fifth Avenue South. The 6,600-square foot, 100-kilowatt canopy is a "net zero" system, meaning the power it generates will be used to run the garage's lights and security cameras, as well as a pair of electric car charging stations.

The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee has a new leader.

Dr. Sandra Stone has been named the new regional chancellor, replacing Dr. Arthur Guilford, who retired this past July.

USF Sarasota-Manatee

After 38 years with the University of South Florida, Arthur Guilford will retire as Regional Chancellor of USF Sarasota-Manatee next year.

While the 68-year-old Guilford will step down at the end of July 2014, he'll remain on to help with the transition to his replacement, and then officially retire in January 2015.

A national search headed by USF St. Petersburg Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska will be conducted for Guilford's replacement.

USF St. Petersburg

WUSF's Mark Schreiner recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Sophia Wisniewska, the new Regional Chancellor for USF Saint Petersburg.

During the interview, Wisniewska, a scholar of Russian language and literature who comes to USFSP after eight years as chancellor of Penn State Brandywine, shared her vision for the future of the second largest campus in the USF System.
